Orange picking at Hillsdale orchard

How was your weekend? We spent ours in the beautiful Hunter Valley with my parents and it was lovely. Stu and I even got to enjoy a romantic Valentine's day dinner!

In our carefree pre-baby days, Stu and I used to travel to the region a few times a year for weekends away. We'd indulge in some wine tasting, good cheese and treat ourselves to a few lavish meals. This time though, it was a bit different - we drove further up North and spent one morning picking oranges at Hillsdale Orchard, nestled in valley at the very end of Thompsons Road, Bulga.

We were greeted by a sweet lady by the name of Betty who gave us a couple of buckets and orange picking tips (gently twist and heavy fruits are good) and sent us on our way. We were the only ones around so we had the entire orchard to ourselves. Alexander ran gleefully about and picked fallen fruit from the ground, even the squishy rotten ones!
The best part was of course eating the oranges - so fresh we could simply peel the skin off bite into the sweet juicy flesh inside.
We ended up with a bucketful of oranges which I will juice as well as eat fresh. I also bought a few golden cucumbers that Betty had picked earlier that day. Those will go nicely with the spicy pork noodles I'm making tonight.

Looks like a great time & fruit off the tree/vine is the best. I can't wait for summer to roll around again & we can go pick blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. I love fall apples as well.

This is so fun! It's nice to be outdoors in the warm sun. Over here it is freezing at -30C. It's crazy. Alex is growing up so fast.

Oh wow, how I wish I could do something as fun out in nature like this in singapore! I would love to visit fruit orchids and spend a long lazy afternoon picking fruits to bring home! Your son looks so adorable, I too picked up everything even the things from the ground as a kid! (more specifically rotting mangos)

I'm so sure Alexander had lots of fun gathering oranges and being out in nature. It's something I'm looking forward to living in the countryside where greenery is everywhere. It's definitely great for children.

What a lovely way to spend the afternoon! Simple fun activities are the way to go now eh? We usually love just doing one thing with Charles and then before we know it, it's dinner, bath time and bed time. And then bed time for us - lol!!
