12 things: Hot air balloon ride

It was a perfect day for a hot air balloon ride - low wind speed, mild temperatures, clear blue skies. Stu and I went for a ride in 1 of 15 hot air balloons at the Hunter Valley balloon festival on the weekend. And it was magical. And wondrous. And exciting, and colourful, and I could just go on and on and on.
Hunter Valley hot air balloon festival
We were meant to go hot air ballooning for my birthday last month at the Barossa Valley, unfortunately our flight was cancelled due to bad weather. At that time, I was sorely disappointed but now, I am actually really glad I missed out then. There's nothing quite like being on a hot air balloon, travelling leisurely over the picturesreque Hunter Valley. What made it even more spectacular and special was having all these other balloons taking off and flying around us. There was a such a great buzz of excitement in the air.

Our experience started as the first rays of the sun appeared at the horizon at the Hunter Valley airport, our launching point. The balloon is so much bigger in reality than I've ever imagined, so the set up process was quite cumbersome and required real team effort. First the balloon was laid on the ground and attached to the burners. Stu helped out by holding up the side of the balloon while a fan inflates it with air. Then loud bursts of flames was used to heat up the air until the balloon lifts off the ground.

At which point, we quickly climbed in and soon enough, we were up!
Up in the air, it was quiet and peaceful, the balloon moved slowly and steadily. We flew above various vineyards and cellar doors, lakes and dams. We saw kangaroos hopping, cattle grazing below us, and other balloons floating around us. It was all a bit surreal and throughout the flight I had this big smile on my face, thinking this is really really awesome.

The whole flight lasted about 45 minutes. As we made our descent, I could see numerous, enormous patches of cow poo and kept thinking how hilarious it would be if we landed on some. Well, turned out we miraculously managed to dodge them all. We did get an excellent pilot.

Oh my God - you´re so brave! I´m afraid of heights so I don´t know if I´d dare to get up in one of those, but I agree that it looks wonderful. :-)

Sounds so fun! So lucky!

One of my dreams is to hot air balloon over in Turkey. (But the gor says it's dangerous, as opposed to being in an aircraft...)
Boo :(

I bet 45 minutes felt really short.

How fantastic! I once went up in a balloon but it was tethered to the ground and only went a little way up and then it came down again. So I think you are very brave and it must have been so worth it, the photos are stunning x
