History lessons

Stu and I always had an inkling our house was built around the 1960s. These days, however, we can pinpoint the exact year, with a fair bit of confidence, to 1960.

Why? Well, in the process of building our new kitchen last year, Stu discovered a stack of newspapers printed on November 2, 1960, that appeared to have been wedged behind the cupboards during the building process. It's hard to explain why, but both of us were really stoked to have found a piece of history about our home. It's like our home had shared a secret with us and revealed a bit about itself.In the last couple of weeks, I started on a little project with the newspapers. By using decoupage techniques, I was able to 'iron' out the creases in the paper to create a collage and then I proceeded to put them in frames for the living room.
It was such an enjoyable task; I am so happy to have a piece of history of my home in my home. I had also studied the newspaper with great interest; I love the retro fonts, the illustrated advertisements selling lingerie, cars, furniture and thought it very ironic that the same issues that were being reported in 1960 (ie. rising costs, employment rates) are still very much modern day problems.
