Barbie and me

I came across these gorgeous pictures of Barbie from this blog and it brought back so many wonderful memories of Barbie and me that I want to share with you today:

  • When I was a little girl, my father could not afford to buy me a Barbie doll house, so my brother made me one out of cardboard. I spent hours decorating it and to this day, I think it's the best doll house a girl can ever have.

  • As I was the only girl in the neighbourhood, I used to play with my brother and his friends when we were little. We would play rough "boy games" first and then as a trade, one of them would have to play Barbie and Ken with me.

  • I started collecting Barbie dolls when I was a teenager and then stopped when I hit my 20s, to this day I have over 50 of these dolls, brand new, unopened at my parent's house.

  • At university, I wrote an entire final essay about Barbie as a postmodern icon and scored a High Distinction for the assignment.

What are your memories of Barbie and you?

For my 9th birthday my uncle and his wife gave me the hugest Barbie house you have ever seen. They even got me a barbie car and a barbie doll that came with its own perfume. I never felt so spoiled ever.

I love Barbie dolls. They are coming out with the vintage barbies now that are so cool. Congrats on the high distinction for your essay!!

I always wanted a Barbie dream house but when I was little it was WAY too much money. I used to go to my cousin's to play with hers all the time. I totally hogged it too. hehe. =)

this is so sweet Trishie...

and good for you on your school report.

i have so many fond memories of me and my barbies. i didn't have as many as you, but i loved them all and i also had ken. didn't have a barbie house, so i would just make makeshift house out of my shoe boxes. i had many little accessories and shoes, so i can relate to the top image. my favorite barbie, till this day is my Western Barbie, she was a rodeo star and she came with a cowboy hat, mini pictures of herself and an autograph stamp. she was so beautiful and loved her hair in big soft curls. i don't have them no more, they stayed at my mom's house when i moved out and i believe she donated them.

Such a sweet story about your doll house... love it.
I didn't love Barbies all that much but my younger sister did. I used to cut her dolls' hair (I know, I am awful...) and she would get quite upset. But I did love organizing their clothes....

oh, i remember playing barbies with my younger sister and we would normally end up fighting and each one of us would try to keep all of the barbiesaway from the other person. and then we would go eat and be fine.

little kids are so bipolar. :D this post made me smile.

hi trishie, very cute, nostalgic post! i remember when my grandparents lived out in amish country and they bought my barbie doll a dress and bonnet, and a bonnet for me too!

and hey, america just voted for barbie to have 2 new careers: news anchor (LOVE the shoes!) and computer engineer, showing girls that in 2010 we can do anything, yay!

My dad picked me up from school one day and he handed me two packages of Barbie (knock-off) clothing but I didn't care! It was cool stuff for my Barbie and I couldn't wait to get home and play.

Wow, you really have alot of memories with barbie, and that's great! I can't say I really have any wonderful memories with barbie, not nearly as wonderful as yours at least!

I only had a few, as I was more of a tom boy, and just played with the same two or three all the time when I did play with them...I do remember that I named my barbie clair though, and her boyfriends name was Chris. xD

I never had many babies...i think it was because my parents couldn't afford them either. But I loved them, I remembered getting my first Ken, but it wasn't Ken. I just called him that because it was my only boy one

Wow! 1st off, those pics are awesome! and 2nd, you have some cool stories! Pretty neat you wrote a great essay on Barbie, and SO CUTE that your brother made you a cardboard Barbie house, that is so sweet!!

I got my first collector's Barbie when I was 10 i think, but it did not stay in the box and her hair got frizzified. I know that they should stay in boxes, but even when I got them in high school I always took them out so I could enjoy them and line them on my mantle. My favorites were the Painters series (Degas water lilies, a Renoir, gorgeous!) the Ballerina series (bc i do ballet), and my absolute favorite is a porcelain one; http://www.barbiecollector.com/showcase/product.aspx?id=1001024&shelfID=&t=modern

Barbie is amazing. My brother would play Barbie and Kens with us when we were really young, now that he's working and I don't see him very much, I miss playing with him! I posted about Barbie too, And I would like to see that doll house of yours!

Fab blog! I loved reading your Barbie stories. It really is an iconic part of history and most every girls' childhood. It's kind of strange how she was inspired by an "adult" toy. Or, perhaps, not strange at all...

I started collecting Barbies when I was in college. I don't have as many as you, I think I have around a dozen. I choose ones that have special significance to me, so those are a little harder to find. Plus, the collector editions are kind of expensive.

Loved this post!

Loving your memories of Barbie. I remember how important Barbie was in my life as a kid. I had tons o Barbies, but never a Barbie house, so I'd always go over to my friend's place just to play with her doll house!

My memory is pretty horrible.

A friend and I made a horror film starring Barbie, Skipper, Ken, another Barbie in my little sister's Barbie house. There were knives. There was ketchup blood. There was, um, a romantic scene. There was murder.

My sister got pretty traumatized.
